A soldier with the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii died on Sunday when a tractor-trailer overturned, according to Stars and Stripes.
The 36-year-old soldier, assigned to Schofield Barracks, was riding as a passenger in the vehicle when the 20-year-old driver lost control, according to a Hawaii Police Department news release.
The vehicle was towing heavy machinery and traveling westbound on Daniel Inouye Highway when the driver lost control, according to police. He attempted to make a left turn onto Māmalahoa Highway and struck the southbound lane guardrail, causing the vehicle to overturn into a culvert, the release said.
Police responded to a 7:28 a.m. call about the incident in Puʻuanahulu, North Kona, and the passenger was taken to the Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:35 p.m. The driver was transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the passenger’s death, the release said.
The passenger’s name will be released after next-of-kin are notified. No other information was immediately available.
The incident occurred about 16 miles west of Pohakuloa Training Area, which is operated by Army Garrison-Hawaii.
