An Alabama Army National Guard soldier died when a Humvee crashed on Interstate 65, north of Atmore, Alabama.

Two soldiers were in the Humvee that crashed Thursday morning, but the second soldier was taken to a local hospital and released, according to the Guard.

Staff Sgt. John Wesley Wardrop, 38, died in the accident. He was a squad leader with the Alabama Guard’s 1165th Military Police Company.

“I am truly saddened at this loss,” Maj. Gen. Sheryl Gordon, Alabama National Guard adjutant general, said in a news release. “I’ve lost soldiers before, and it never gets easier. I am praying for the family, and we are reaching out to them to help them in any way we can.”

There are no additional details as the incident is under investigation.
