The Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s George Delta Chapter at the University of North Georgia is raising money to create a scholarship fund for their fallen friend, 1st Lt. Weston Lee, who was killed in Iraq last week.
According to a GoFundMe page, the goal is to raise $100,000 to provide a scholarship in Lee’s name to fraternity members. “Our chapter has the goal of establishing an SAE schoarship in Weston’s name, in hopes of rewarding young men who live Weston’s legacy of dedication and service,” the GoFundMe page says.
The page was set up by Colin Marney, a fraternity brother of Lee’s at the university of North Georgia, according to Military.com. Marney just graduated and is shipping off to Fort Benning, Georgia, this weekend.
Lee, 25, died from wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated during a patrol outside Mosul, Army officials told Army Times. He joined the Army in 2015 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Lee deployed to Iraq in December with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team to help fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
